South Abington Twp. woman's Cream Wafers satisfy sweet tooth
For anyone who loves Oreos and other types of cream-filled goodies, this is a Local Flavor: Recipes We Love entry you'll want to pay close attention to.
This week, the contest spotlights South Abington Twp. resident Kathryn Owens' Cream Wafers, delectable little cookies that can be eaten by the dozen. For her efforts, Mrs. Owens received a $100 gift certificate from Ray's ShurSave Supermarkets, which has locations in Old Forge, Waymart, Factoryville and Montrose.
Mrs. Owens was attending a bridal shower about 40 years ago when she first tried Cream Wafers. She liked them so much she made it a point to get the recipe from her friend.
"They were so attractive and tasty. I asked for the recipe, and the rest is history," Mrs. Owens said.
Ever since then, the cookies have been a Christmastime must for her family, who have taken to calling them "Gran's Green Cookies," due to the festive green food coloring Mrs. Owens puts in the cream.
